College Literature is a Challenge Course offered through Southwest Minnesota State University for college credit. According to the SMSU course catalog, “This course will deepen students’ understanding and appreciation of literature as an art form as well as strengthen students’ ability to read short stories, poems, novels, and drama for meaning.” Students will understand the various types of literary criticism and be able to apply them to the literature they read in class. Assignments for this course will include: reading assignments, journal writing, papers, quizzes, and tests.
We will be reading the novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. We will also be reading the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare. Besides these three longer works, we will be reading a variety of short stories and poems. You will need a notebook for this class. One section will be used as a reading response journal, the other for notes. You will receive a high school grade and a college grade (from your SMSU professor) for this course. Your high school grade will follow the grading scale of the MCC English Department. |
